QUICK VEGAS TRIP
On a quick business trip to Vegas we were looking for somewhere new, fast and interesting to eat. One of our favorite restaurants in Vegas is Mon Ami Gabi at the Paris Hotel. Mon Ami Gabi is part of a network of restaurants called "Lettuce Entertain You" which gives credit for eating at restaurants in their network that can be used towards future meals. So I used my Lettuce Eats app on my phone to find some place mid-price range but still good and interesting. El Segundo Sol caught my attention right away because it said:
"their signature tacos (are) as authentic as any you might find across the border. Offering ten delicious varieties ranging from all-natural chicken to lobster, slow-braised beef short rib to vegetarian, there is a taco that will appeal to every taste bud. More than 3,000 tortillas are made from scratch daily, pressed and griddled fresh-to-order by professional ‘tortilleras’ who have mastered the traditional Mexican technique." - Lettuce Entertain You.
My husband loves tacos and is picky about how they are prepared. We both LOVE Mexican food and don't get enough of it in Utah where good Mexican food is hard to find. So we made reservations.
El Segundo Sol is located right on the strip as part of the Fashion Place Mall - right across the street from the Wynn Hotel. Outdoor eating gives fabulous views for those who love to people watch on the Strip. The inside seating still allows a good view of the strip.
Unlike most Mexican food restaurants, the chips and salsa aren't free - but you can order "bottomless chips and salsa" for a few dollars. The chips are thicker than I usually like, but tasty. And the 3 kinds of salsa that come with it are excellent: charred tomato, roasted tomatillo and pico de gallo. I love tomatillo salsa - and this was probably hands down one of the best I have ever tasted!
Steve ordered the carne asada tacos. They come unassembled with corn tortillas in a cup- and they cook the marinated steak strips to your preference. Steve liked them very much- even though his favorite kind of taco is the kind that are fried to a delicious crisp.
I ordered the marinated steak fajita platter. Like the tacos, they came unassembled -but unlike tacos that's typical for fajitas. The marinated steak strips for the fajitas are cooked to preference as well. The steak strips were great meaty (not fatty) cuts of steak with the perfect number of grill marks on each, so that the taste of char is there but not too much. The flavor of the meat was excellent and I ordered medium well - which they were. One of the best parts of this entrée is all the grilled veggies - a small corn on the cob, chiles, cherry tomatoes, asparagus and peppers. All the grilled veggies had a slight char on the outside and were bursting with flavor on the inside. So tasty! I chose flour tortillas which they hand-make. They were good and fresh tasting though not the best tortillas I've ever had. The guacamole was so good, Steve was coming after mine after his was gone. And because we had ordered the bottomless chips and salsa, I kept asking for more of the roasted tomatillo to dunk my fajitas in. The fajitas and grilled veggies were so good that I stuffed myself on them and didn't have room left to try the rice and black beans that came on the side.
The price was good, the atmosphere was excellent, the waiter was attentive and best of all - the food was very tasty and didn't disappoint! We will definitely be eating at El Segundo Sol again!
That looks fantastic! I'm going to be in Vegas this weekend and I will definitely check this place out. How is their drink menu?
